holding not knowing

This practice is part of the Still Point collection — a set of reflections designed to help you pause, think clearly, and lead with intention.

Practice 7: Holding Not Knowing

Use this when you are living with ambiguity, waiting for clarity, or tempted to force an answer before it is ready.

Purpose

To strengthen your capacity to remain grounded in uncertainty, supporting wiser and more considered decisions.

Set-up

Find a quiet space. Allow 5–10 minutes. You may wish to write.

Flow

  1. Bring to mind something you do not yet know — a decision, outcome or next step.

  2. Notice any urge to force clarity.

  3. Ask yourself:
    - What would it be like to let this remain open, for now?
    - What does this not knowing need from me today?

  4. Choose a word or short phrase that captures how you want to relate to this uncertainty over the coming days.

The aim is not resolution.

It is the capacity to stay present without forcing an answer.
