what’s in the tank?

This practice is part of the Still Point collection — a set of reflections designed to help you pause, think clearly, and lead with intention.

Practice 1: What’s in the Tank?

Use this when you are tired, over-extended, or aware that you may be making decisions from depletion rather than clarity.

Purpose

To pause and assess your current level of resource — mentally, emotionally and physically — so that decisions and actions come from awareness rather than depletion.

Set-up

You will need a pen and paper. Find a quiet place where you will not be disturbed. Allow yourself around 20 minutes.

Flow

  1. Bring to mind how you feel right now. Notice your energy levels. How full or empty does your tank feel?

  2. Write continuously for five minutes. Keep the pen moving. If you run out of words, write that and continue until the next thought arrives.

  3. Pause. Circle or highlight three words that feel important. Write continuously for five minutes about those words.

  4. Repeat this process once more.

  5. You will now have nine highlighted words. Write yourself a short message — a line of wisdom from you to you — that will help you conserve or renew your energy today.
